Run an affiliate review site. Noticed our monetized content seems to get fewer AI citations than non-monetized content.

Questions:

  • Do affiliate links actually hurt AI visibility?
  • How can we make affiliate content AI-friendly?
  • Is there a way to monetize while maintaining AI visibility?

Looking for experiences from other affiliate publishers.

Affiliate links don’t directly hurt AI visibility. What hurts is BIASED content that results from affiliate relationships.

What AI deprioritizes:

  • Overly positive reviews (no cons)
  • Obviously promotional content
  • Missing important competitor mentions
  • Thin reviews without real experience

What works for affiliate + AI:

ApproachAI VisibilityTrust
Honest pros/consHighHigh
Personal testingHighHigh
Competitor inclusionHighHigh
“Best X” with biasLowLow
Only affiliate productsLowLow

The key: Content should be helpful regardless of monetization. If you’d recommend the same things without affiliate relationships, AI is more likely to cite you.

What worked for our affiliate site:

Changes we made:

  1. Include non-affiliate products in comparisons
  2. Honest cons for every product
  3. Clear affiliate disclosures
  4. Real testing and experience
  5. Recommend against products when warranted

Results: AI citations actually increased despite affiliate links. Honesty builds the trust AI looks for.

The counterintuitive truth: Being willing to recommend against affiliate products builds credibility that HELPS affiliate performance.

This reframes how I think about affiliate content. Key changes:

Content approach:

  • Honest pros AND cons for everything
  • Include non-affiliate alternatives
  • Real testing and personal experience
  • Clear disclosures

The insight: Affiliate links aren’t the problem - bias is. Honest affiliate content can still get cited.

Thanks everyone!
