I’ve implemented the basics - FAQ sections, schema, structured content. Now what?

What I’ve done:

  • FAQ sections on key pages
  • FAQPage schema implemented
  • Question-format headings
  • Direct answers in first paragraphs
  • Am I Cited monitoring set up

Results so far:

  • Some Perplexity citations
  • Occasional Google AI Overview appearances
  • ChatGPT still mostly ignores us

What I want to know:

  1. What separates good from great in GEO?
  2. What tactics do the experts use?
  3. How do you think about GEO strategically vs tactically?
  4. What advanced metrics should I track?

I feel like I’m doing GEO 101. What’s GEO 401?

Here’s the progression from basic to advanced:

Basic GEO (where you are):

  • Content structure optimization
  • FAQ sections and schema
  • Monitoring citations
  • Single-platform focus

Intermediate GEO:

  • Multi-platform strategies
  • Competitive analysis
  • Entity optimization
  • Content velocity optimization

Advanced GEO:

AreaWhat It Involves
Entity ArchitectureBuilding knowledge graph presence across platforms
Training InfluenceCreating content that shapes future AI models
Competitive DisplacementSystematically replacing competitor citations
Cross-Platform OrchestrationCoordinated strategies across all AI platforms
Predictive TargetingIdentifying tomorrow’s AI queries today
Attribution ModelingUnderstanding AI’s role in conversion paths

The mindset shift: Basic: “How do I get cited?” Advanced: “How do I become the definitive source AI systems trust?”

It’s not about tactics. It’s about positioning.

Entity architecture is the advanced skill most people miss:

What it means: AI systems understand the world through entities and relationships. Your brand is an entity. You need to define it across the knowledge ecosystem.

Entity touchpoints:

PlatformWhat It Does
WikipediaDefines you in training data
WikidataStructured entity data
Google Knowledge PanelGoogle’s understanding
LinkedInProfessional entity
CrunchbaseBusiness entity
Industry directoriesNiche authority

Advanced entity strategy:

  1. Consistency - Same name, description, relationships everywhere
  2. Relationships - Define what you do, who you serve, who you compete with
  3. Attributes - Consistent properties (founding date, location, products)
  4. Authority signals - Each platform reinforces the others

The test: Ask ChatGPT: “What is [Your Company]?”

  • If accurate: Entity architecture working
  • If wrong/unknown: Entity needs work

Entity work takes 6-12 months but compounds forever.

Training_Influence AI Research Consultant · December 15, 2025

Training influence is the long game. Here’s how to think about it:

How AI learns about you:

  1. Training data (historical) - What’s in the model
  2. Retrieval (real-time) - What it finds when searching
  3. Reinforcement (ongoing) - User interactions

Training data influence (6-12+ month horizon):

  • Get mentioned in authoritative sources
  • Create content that gets cited by others
  • Publish original research others reference
  • Build presence on sources AI trains from

Retrieval influence (immediate):

  • Appear in real-time search results
  • Optimize for Bing (ChatGPT uses it)
  • Fresh, updated content
  • Strong SEO fundamentals

The compound effect: If you’re cited by authoritative sources → Those sources train AI → AI learns to trust you → AI cites you directly → Cycle continues

Advanced play: Don’t just optimize for AI citations. Optimize for being cited by sources that AI trusts, which then influences future AI models.

This is 3D chess, not checkers.

Competitive_Displacement · December 15, 2025

Competitive displacement is an advanced skill:

The goal: When AI currently cites competitor X for a query, systematically replace X with you.

Process:

  1. Identify displacement targets

    • Monitor queries where competitors appear
    • Find queries where you SHOULD appear but don’t
    • Prioritize high-value queries
  2. Analysis

    • Why is competitor being cited?
    • What content are they getting cited from?
    • What signals does that content have?
  3. Superior content creation

    • Create content that’s objectively better
    • More comprehensive
    • Better structured
    • Stronger authority signals
  4. Distribution

    • Get your content in front of AI systems
    • Build citations from authoritative sources
    • Create multiple touchpoints for the same topic
  5. Monitor and iterate

    • Track whether displacement happens
    • Analyze what worked
    • Apply learnings to next target

Timeline: Displacement takes 2-6 months per query depending on platform.

This is active, offensive GEO - not just defensive optimization.

Platform_Orchestration Multi-Platform Strategist · December 15, 2025

Cross-platform orchestration is where advanced practitioners shine:

The problem with platform-specific: Optimizing for one platform at a time is inefficient. Platforms influence each other.

Orchestration approach:

ActionPlatform Impact
Wikipedia presenceHelps ChatGPT, Claude
Strong Bing SEOHelps ChatGPT browsing
Reddit authorityHelps Perplexity
Google rankingsHelps Google AI Overview
YouTube contentHelps all platforms

The strategy: Create unified campaigns that impact multiple platforms simultaneously.

Example orchestrated campaign:

  1. Publish original research on your blog
  2. Create YouTube video explaining findings
  3. Get press coverage citing the research
  4. Share insights in relevant Reddit communities
  5. Pitch for industry publication coverage

Result: Single campaign creates touchpoints for:

  • Google AI (blog + YouTube + PR)
  • ChatGPT (PR + blog authority + Bing)
  • Perplexity (Reddit + fresh content + PR)

Efficiency through integration.

Advanced metrics go beyond citation counts:

Basic metrics:

  • Citation frequency
  • Platforms appearing on
  • Brand mentions

Advanced metrics:

MetricWhat It MeasuresWhy It Matters
Share of Voice% of category queries you appear inMarket position
Citation PositionAre you 1st or last source cited?Prominence
Sentiment ScoreHow AI characterizes youBrand perception
Displacement RateTaking citations from competitorsCompetitive wins
Cross-Platform ConsistencySame messaging across AIsEntity coherence
Response QualityHow accurately AI describes youTraining influence
Conversion AttributionAI’s role in customer journeyBusiness impact

Tracking approach:

  1. Set up Am I Cited with comprehensive query coverage
  2. Build custom dashboards for advanced metrics
  3. Track changes over time, not just snapshots
  4. Correlate AI visibility with business outcomes

The ultimate metric: Revenue attributable to AI visibility. This requires sophisticated attribution modeling across touchpoints.

Predictive_Strategy · December 14, 2025

Predictive query targeting is the edge advanced practitioners have:

The concept: Instead of reacting to current AI queries, predict what people will ask AI tomorrow.

How to predict:

  1. Trend analysis

    • What’s emerging in your industry?
    • What new problems are arising?
    • What technologies are coming?
  2. Query evolution

    • How are existing queries becoming more specific?
    • What follow-up questions are common?
    • What adjacent topics are growing?
  3. Competitor gaps

    • What will competitors need to create content about?
    • Where are they behind on emerging topics?
  4. AI behavior patterns

    • What types of queries does AI currently struggle with?
    • Where are gaps in AI knowledge?

The play: Create authoritative content for emerging queries BEFORE demand peaks. When AI needs to answer these queries, you’re already the established source.

Example: In 2024, we predicted questions about “AI SEO” would explode. Created comprehensive content in Q2. By Q4, we were the default citation.

Be where AI will look, before it looks there.

  • Create consistency across touchpoints
  • Build missing entity profiles
  • Test AI understanding of our brand

Month 3-4: Competitive Displacement

  • Identify 10 priority displacement targets
  • Analyze competitor citation patterns
  • Create superior content for target queries
  • Launch displacement campaigns

Month 5-6: Platform Orchestration

  • Design integrated campaigns
  • Coordinate content across platforms
