We have limited resources and can’t optimize for everything.

The platforms we’re tracking:

  • ChatGPT (massive user base)
  • Perplexity (research-focused)
  • Claude (growing)
  • Google AI Overviews (search integration)
  • Gemini (Google’s chatbot)

Our dilemma:

  • Each platform seems to have different requirements
  • We don’t have resources to optimize for all
  • Need to prioritize but don’t know which
  • Different team members advocate for different platforms

Questions:

  1. Which platform has the highest business impact?
  2. Are the optimization strategies really different?
  3. What metrics should drive prioritization?
  4. Is there a universal approach that works everywhere?

Need a framework for platform prioritization.

Here’s the data-driven framework for prioritization:

Platform comparison (2026 data):

PlatformUser BaseCitation BehaviorClick-ThroughBest For
ChatGPT800M+ weeklyVaries (search vs base)MediumGeneral audience
Google AI OverviewsBillions (search)Within search resultsHighSearch traffic
Perplexity~10M monthlyAlways cites sourcesVery highResearch audience
ClaudeGrowing rapidlySelectiveMediumTechnical/professional
GeminiGrowingWithin Google ecosystemMediumGoogle users

Traffic potential ranking:

  1. Google AI Overviews - Built into billions of searches
  2. ChatGPT - Massive users but variable referral behavior
  3. Perplexity - Smaller but highly engaged research users
  4. Claude/Gemini - Growing but smaller current impact

Optimization overlap:

Good news: ~80% of optimization tactics work across platforms:

  • Quality, comprehensive content
  • Clear structure
  • Authority signals
  • Technical accessibility

Platform-specific factors (~20%):

  • Perplexity: Freshness extremely important
  • ChatGPT Search: Bing indexing matters
  • Google AI: Google indexing/ranking signals

So if we had to pick ONE platform to focus on, which would you recommend? Or is that the wrong question?

The right answer: Don’t pick one. Build for universal AI best practices first.

But if forced to prioritize:

For B2C / high-volume businesses:

  1. Google AI Overviews (integrated with search)
  2. ChatGPT (massive reach)
  3. Perplexity (engaged researchers)

For B2B / considered purchases:

  1. Perplexity (research-heavy buyers)
  2. ChatGPT (general discovery)
  3. Google AI Overviews

For technical products:

  1. Claude (technical audience)
  2. Perplexity (research depth)
  3. ChatGPT

The framework:

Ask: “Where does our target audience search when researching solutions like ours?”

  • Consumer products: ChatGPT + Google AI
  • Enterprise software: Perplexity + Claude
  • Professional services: All platforms
  • Technical tools: Claude + Perplexity

Resource allocation:

  • 70% Universal best practices (benefits all)
  • 20% Primary platform specific
  • 10% Secondary platform specific

Practical experience across platforms:

What we learned optimizing for each:

ChatGPT:

  • Pro: Massive reach
  • Con: Hard to track (varied citation behavior)
  • Focus: General content quality, Bing indexing

Google AI Overviews:

  • Pro: Integrated with search, clear attribution
  • Con: Competitive (same as SEO competition)
  • Focus: Traditional SEO + AI optimization

Perplexity:

  • Pro: Always cites, high-intent users
  • Con: Smaller user base
  • Focus: Freshness, comprehensive answers

Claude:

  • Pro: Growing technical audience
  • Con: Smaller currently
  • Focus: Technical accuracy, depth

Our resource allocation:

We’re B2B SaaS, so:

  • 40% Perplexity (research-heavy buyers)
  • 30% Google AI (still critical for search)
  • 20% ChatGPT (general discovery)
  • 10% Claude (technical audience)

The insight:

Monitor all, but invest proportionally to where your specific audience actually searches.

Here’s the universal optimization checklist that benefits ALL platforms:

Technical (benefits all equally):

  • Server-side rendering (not JS-dependent)
  • Fast page speed (under 2.5s)
  • AI crawlers not blocked
  • Schema markup implemented
  • Mobile-friendly

Content (benefits all equally):

  • Comprehensive coverage
  • Answer-first structure
  • Question-based headings
  • Self-contained sections
  • Original data/insights

Authority (benefits all equally):

  • Author credentials visible
  • Third-party validation
  • Updated dates
  • Accurate information
  • Clear sourcing

Do these first. They’re 80% of the battle.

Then platform-specific:

PlatformAdditional Focus
Google AIGoogle ranking signals, Search Console
ChatGPT SearchBing indexing, Bing Webmaster Tools
PerplexityExtreme freshness, frequent updates
ClaudeTechnical depth, accuracy

Don’t optimize for one platform at the expense of fundamentals that help all.

Let data drive your prioritization:

How to determine YOUR priority platform:

Step 1: Check current traffic

  • Google Analytics: Referrals from ai.com, perplexity.ai, claude.ai
  • Note: ChatGPT often shows as “direct” traffic

Step 2: Ask your audience

  • Survey: “Which AI tools do you use for research?”
  • Sales team: What do prospects mention using?

Step 3: Test visibility

  • Am I Cited: Where are you currently appearing?
  • Manual checks: Ask your key questions on each platform

Step 4: Analyze patterns

PlatformCurrent VisibilityAudience UsagePriority Score
ChatGPTLow/Medium/HighLow/Medium/HighMultiply
PerplexityLow/Medium/HighLow/Medium/HighMultiply
Google AILow/Medium/HighLow/Medium/HighMultiply
ClaudeLow/Medium/HighLow/Medium/HighMultiply

Highest score = Your priority platform.

Step 5: Set benchmarks

  • Track citations monthly
  • Compare improvement rates
  • Adjust priority based on results

Let performance data, not assumptions, drive your strategy.

This gives me a framework. Here’s how I’m approaching this:

Our situation assessment:

We’re B2B professional services:

  • High-consideration purchases
  • Research-heavy buyers
  • Technical decision makers

Platform priority (based on audience fit):

  1. Perplexity (40% focus) - Research-heavy matches our buyers
  2. Google AI (30% focus) - Still critical for search visibility
  3. ChatGPT (20% focus) - General discovery
  4. Claude (10% focus) - Technical audience potential

Resource allocation:

Phase 1: Universal foundations (Month 1-2)

  • Technical optimization
  • Content restructuring
  • Authority signals

Phase 2: Primary platform (Month 3-4)

  • Perplexity-specific: Freshness focus, update cadence
  • Heavy monitoring and iteration

Phase 3: Secondary platforms (Month 5+)

  • Google AI: SEO integration
  • ChatGPT: Bing optimization
  • Claude: Technical content depth

Measurement:

  • Weekly: Citation tracking via Am I Cited
  • Monthly: Platform-specific visibility scores
  • Quarterly: Traffic attribution review

The key insight:

Don’t spread thin across all platforms. Universal best practices first, then focus resources on platform(s) where your specific audience searches.

Thanks for the strategic framework!
