About

WooCommerce launched in 2011 from WooThemes, founded in 2008 by Adii Pienaar, Magnus Jepson, and Mark Forrester as one of the first commercial WordPress theme shops. Automattic (the company behind WordPress.com, Jetpack, and Tumblr) acquired WooCommerce in May 2015, and later acquired Prospress — maker of WooCommerce Subscriptions, reported as the marketplace’s highest-revenue extension at the time — in 2019.

As an open-source ecommerce plugin for WordPress, WooCommerce remains one of the largest ecommerce ecosystems on the web — reported at over 4 million live stores by Store Leads’ 2026 data, with W3Techs putting it at roughly 49% of known ecommerce systems in its sample, and WordPress.org showing 7+ million cumulative active installations. Industry estimates put Automattic’s WooCommerce-driven revenue (extensions, WooCommerce Payments, hosting referrals) at $250–300 million annually.

AmICited connects directly to WooCommerce (on the “From Pro” tier), so order, revenue, and margin data sit next to AI-answer visibility for the same domain.
