I’m building our 2026-2027 AI search strategy. But everything I read is based on how AI works TODAY.

What worries me:

  • ChatGPT could change dramatically with each update
  • New AI platforms could emerge and dominate
  • Google AI Overviews could reshape everything
  • What works today might not work in 6 months

What I need to know:

  • What principles are “timeless” for AI search?
  • What’s likely to change vs. stay constant?
  • How do you build strategy that adapts to change?
  • What are you NOT investing in because it seems temporary?

I don’t want to invest heavily in tactics that become obsolete.

Great question. Here’s how I think about future-proofing:

What’s Likely to Stay Constant:

  1. AI needs sources - Regardless of platform, AI will cite content. Being citable is timeless.

  2. Helpful content wins - AI is designed to help users. Genuinely helpful content will always be valuable.

  3. Structure aids extraction - AI extracts information. Well-structured content will always be easier to extract.

  4. Authority matters - AI needs to trust sources. Building real authority never becomes obsolete.

  5. Entity recognition - AI understands entities. Being a recognized entity benefits you across all platforms.

What’s Likely to Change:

  1. Specific platform dominance - ChatGPT might not be #1 forever
  2. Algorithm specifics - How AI weights different signals
  3. New content formats - Video, audio, interactive content in AI
  4. Integration patterns - How AI is embedded in workflows

The Timeless Strategy:

Invest in fundamentals that work across any AI system:

  • Comprehensive, authoritative content
  • Clear structure and extractable answers
  • Strong entity recognition
  • Genuine expertise and helpfulness

These work today, worked for SEO, and will work for whatever comes next.

How do you balance investing in timeless fundamentals vs. platform-specific optimization?

80/20 Rule for Future-Proofing:

80% on fundamentals:

  • Content quality and structure
  • Entity building
  • Authority signals
  • Technical foundation

These investments compound over time and transfer across platforms.

20% on platform-specific:

  • Understanding platform nuances
  • Testing specific tactics
  • Monitoring platform changes
  • Quick wins for current leaders

Platform-specific tactics are worth testing, but don’t over-invest. When a platform changes, that investment may be lost.

Example allocation:

Budget: $100,000 for AI search

  • $80,000: Content restructuring, schema, authority building
  • $20,000: Platform research, testing, tools for current platforms

If ChatGPT changes dramatically, you lose maybe $20k of effort. The $80k transfers to whatever’s next.

The danger:

Over-optimizing for ChatGPT’s current algorithm is like over-optimizing for Google’s algorithm circa 2010. It worked then, but didn’t last.

Build for principles, not platforms.

Historical perspective from SEO:

What stayed constant from 2005-2025:

  • Quality content matters
  • Authority helps
  • User experience matters
  • Technical accessibility is foundational

What changed constantly:

  • Specific ranking factors
  • Algorithm updates
  • Platform features
  • What “quality” looks like

The SEO lesson for AI:

Those who built on fundamentals survived every algorithm update. Those who built on tricks had to restart repeatedly.

Apply to AI:

Build content that would be valuable regardless of AI. If your content is genuinely authoritative and helpful, it works for:

  • ChatGPT today
  • Whatever AI platform emerges tomorrow
  • Google AI Overviews
  • Future platforms we can’t imagine

Don’t ask “What does ChatGPT want?” Ask “What would be genuinely most helpful to users?”

The platforms will figure out how to surface that content.

Process for staying adaptable:

Monthly Monitoring:

  • Check AI visibility metrics
  • Note any significant changes
  • Track platform updates

Quarterly Review:

  • What’s working? Double down
  • What’s not working? Investigate
  • Any major platform changes to address?
  • Adjust tactics (not strategy)

Annual Strategy Review:

  • Reassess fundamentals
  • Consider new platforms
  • Update investment allocation
  • Major strategy adjustments if needed

Adaptation Triggers:

Minor trigger (tactical adjustment):

  • One platform changes algorithm
  • Visibility dips on specific queries
  • New competitor tactics observed

Major trigger (strategy review):

  • New platform gains significant market share
  • Fundamental shift in how AI uses content
  • Your category becomes more competitive in AI

The key:

Build review cadence into your process. Don’t wait for crisis to adapt. Regular monitoring catches shifts early.

What I’m investing in vs. avoiding:

Heavy Investment (Timeless):

  • Comprehensive pillar content
  • Entity recognition (Wikipedia, Wikidata)
  • Schema markup (standard types)
  • Author authority building
  • Technical foundation

Moderate Investment (Current + Future):

  • AI monitoring tools
  • Content restructuring
  • FAQ optimization
  • Platform-specific testing

Minimal Investment (Potentially Temporary):

  • Platform-specific hacks
  • Over-optimizing for single AI
  • Tactics based on current model quirks
  • Short-term citation tricks

Why:

Heavy investment areas have been valuable for decades and will continue. If AI changes completely, this work still has value.

Minimal investment areas might become worthless with one platform update. Not worth heavy investment.

Multi-platform approach for resilience:

Don’t bet on one AI platform.

Current situation:

  • ChatGPT: ~60% market share
  • Perplexity: Growing rapidly
  • Google AI: Massive potential
  • Claude: Increasing visibility
  • Others: Emerging

If you only optimize for ChatGPT:

  • Perplexity users don’t see you
  • Google AI users don’t see you
  • Future dominant platform users don’t see you

Multi-platform strategy:

  1. Monitor all major platforms Track visibility across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude

  2. Identify cross-platform patterns What works everywhere? Prioritize those tactics.

  3. Notice platform-specific opportunities Some content works better on Perplexity than ChatGPT. Understand differences.

  4. Balance investment Don’t over-index on current leader. Spread attention.

The future-proof benefit:

When platform dominance shifts (and it will), you’re not starting over. You’ve built for all of them.

Content investment that lasts:

Content that ages well:

  • Evergreen educational content
  • Comprehensive topic guides
  • Original research and data
  • Expert analysis and insights
  • Foundational how-to guides

Content that ages poorly:

  • Trend-based pieces without updates
  • Platform-specific guides (may become outdated)
  • News commentary without evergreen elements
  • Thin content based on current queries

The compounding effect:

Evergreen content:

  • Year 1: Gets citations
  • Year 2: Gets more citations (established authority)
  • Year 3: Gets even more (recognized as foundational)

Trend content:

  • Year 1: Gets citations
  • Year 2: Becomes irrelevant
  • Year 3: Forgotten

Investment implication:

Spend 80% on evergreen content that compounds. Spend 20% on timely content that captures current attention.

The evergreen content is your future-proof foundation.

This thread shaped my future-proof strategy. Key principles:

Timeless Investments (80% of effort):

  • Comprehensive, authoritative content
  • Entity recognition building
  • Technical foundation (schema, accessibility)
  • Author and brand authority
  • Content structure for extraction

Adaptive Investments (20% of effort):

  • Platform monitoring
  • Tactical testing
  • Current platform optimization
  • Emerging platform awareness

Process for Staying Adaptive:

  • Weekly: Monitor metrics
  • Monthly: Note changes, adjust tactics
  • Quarterly: Review what’s working, reallocate
  • Annually: Strategic reassessment

What I’m NOT Doing:

  • Over-optimizing for ChatGPT specifically
  • Building on platform-specific quirks
  • Ignoring emerging platforms
  • Set-and-forget strategies

Key insight:

Build for principles, not platforms. The platforms will change. Genuinely helpful, authoritative, well-structured content works everywhere.

Thanks everyone for the frameworks and historical perspective!

Frequently Asked Questions

What AI search strategies are most likely to remain relevant?
Strategies focused on fundamentals stay relevant: being genuinely helpful, creating authoritative content, building clear entity recognition, and providing structured information AI can understand. These principles work regardless of which AI platforms dominate or how algorithms change.
Should you optimize for specific AI platforms or take a general approach?
Optimize for principles, not platforms. While monitoring platform-specific patterns is useful, building content that’s well-structured, authoritative, and helpful works across all AI systems. Over-optimizing for ChatGPT specifically may not help with Perplexity or future platforms.
How often should AI search strategies be reviewed and updated?
Review strategy quarterly to assess what’s working and adapt to platform changes. Monitor ongoing (weekly) to catch shifts early. Major strategy overhauls should be annual unless significant industry changes occur. Balance consistency (compound effects) with adaptability.
