We send out press releases regularly - product updates, company news, partnerships.

I’m wondering if this helps AI visibility or if it’s old-school thinking.

Current approach:

  • Wire distribution (PR Newswire, Business Wire)
  • Posted on our newsroom
  • Shared on social

Questions:

  1. Do press releases actually help with AI citations?
  2. Is wire distribution valuable for AI, or just for old SEO?
  3. What’s the modern approach to PR for AI visibility?
  4. Should we change our PR strategy?

PR is a significant investment. Want to make sure it’s contributing to modern visibility goals.

Let me give you the honest breakdown:

Press releases themselves: Limited AI value

Wire-distributed press releases:

  • Often ignored by AI (seen as promotional)
  • Duplicate content across many sites
  • Not authoritative third-party validation

Press COVERAGE: High AI value

Articles in publications ABOUT you:

  • Third-party validation AI trusts
  • Builds brand mentions across authoritative sources
  • Creates the signals AI looks for

The distinction:

ActivityAI ImpactWhy
Press release on wireLowPromotional, duplicative
Newsroom on your siteLowYour own claims
Article in publicationHighThird-party validation
Quoted in news storyHighExpert recognition
Bylined articleMedium-HighExpertise demonstration

The shift:

Old PR: Success = release distributed AI-aware PR: Success = coverage earned

Building on this - how to shift the approach:

Old model:

  1. Write press release
  2. Distribute on wire
  3. Measure pickups
  4. Done

AI-aware model:

  1. Create newsworthy content (research, data, expert insights)
  2. Pitch to relevant journalists
  3. Earn actual coverage (articles, quotes, features)
  4. Track brand mentions and AI visibility impact

What gets coverage:

  • Original research with interesting findings
  • Data nobody else has
  • Expert perspectives on trending topics
  • Genuine news (not just product updates)

The press release can still be the vehicle, but the goal is coverage, not distribution.

Thought leadership angle for AI:

What AI values from PR activities:

  1. Expert commentary in publications

    • You’re quoted as an expert
    • Publications cite your perspective
    • AI learns you’re an authority
  2. Bylined articles

    • Your thought leadership in industry pubs
    • Demonstrates expertise
    • Creates citable content
  3. Research that gets cited

    • Your study is referenced by others
    • Creates “source of truth” signals
    • AI cites the original research

Best PR investments for AI:

  1. Original research program
  2. Expert commentary service (HARO, Qwoted)
  3. Bylined article placement
  4. Relationship building with key journalists

These create the third-party validation that actually moves AI visibility.

Makes sense. The release itself isn’t the value - the coverage is.

Question: Should we stop wire distribution entirely, or does it still have value?

Wire distribution still has SOME value, just not for AI directly:

Wire distribution value:

  • Journalist awareness (they monitor wires)
  • Compliance requirements (publicly traded)
  • Basic SEO signals (links, though diminished)
  • Investor/analyst reach

What it doesn’t do:

  • Create AI-worthy citations
  • Build third-party validation
  • Establish authority signals AI trusts

Recommendation:

Don’t abandon wire distribution if:

  • You’re publicly traded (required)
  • It’s part of journalist outreach strategy
  • Budget is not an issue

But shift investment toward:

  • Journalist relationship building
  • Original research
  • Expert commentary programs
  • Earned media over distributed media

Budget reallocation example:

Old: 80% wire distribution, 20% earned media New: 40% wire distribution, 60% earned media + thought leadership

How to measure PR impact on AI visibility:

Track:

  1. Press coverage earned (articles, quotes, features)
  2. Brand mentions from PR activities
  3. AI citations before/after major coverage
  4. Correlation between coverage and AI visibility

What to look for:

  • When you get coverage in [publication], do AI citations increase?
  • Which types of coverage correlate with AI impact?
  • Is earned media driving brand mentions AI sees?

Practical tracking:

PR ActivityCoverage ResultAI Impact
Product launch5 articlesMonitor AI citations for 4-6 weeks
Research release12 articles + quotesTrack research citations
Expert commentary3 quotesCheck if cited by AI

This reveals which PR activities actually move AI visibility.

Here’s my PR strategy evolution:

Keep (but reduce emphasis):

  • Wire distribution for major announcements
  • Newsroom updates
  • Basic PR workflow

Increase investment:

  1. Original research (quarterly data studies)
  2. Expert commentary (HARO, journalist relationships)
  3. Bylined articles (industry publications)
  4. Relationship building (key journalists in our space)

New success metrics:

  • Articles earned (not releases distributed)
  • Quotes and expert citations
  • Brand mentions in authoritative sources
  • AI visibility correlation

Budget shift:

  • 50% to earned media/thought leadership
  • 30% to research production
  • 20% to traditional wire/distribution

This aligns PR with what actually builds AI visibility.

On original research specifically:

Why research works for AI:

  1. Creates data others cite
  2. You become the source
  3. AI cites original sources
  4. News coverage is natural

Research that works:

  • Industry surveys (500+ respondents)
  • Benchmark data (your own data analyzed)
  • Trend analysis with unique angle
  • Comparative studies

Distribution strategy:

  1. Publish research on your site (citable source)
  2. Press release announcing findings
  3. Pitch exclusive to tier-1 publication
  4. Expert commentary on findings

Example flow:

Your research → TechCrunch covers it → Others cite TechCrunch → AI cites TechCrunch citing you → You’re the authority

Research creates a chain of citations that ultimately benefits AI visibility.

Bottom line on PR and AI:

Old PR mindset: Get the word out AI-aware PR mindset: Build the evidence that AI trusts

AI systems are looking for:

  • Third-party validation
  • Expert recognition
  • Consistent mentions across sources

Press releases alone don’t create these. Earned coverage does.

Shift from distribution to reputation building. The PR that helps AI is the PR that builds genuine authority in your space.
