Just learned AI search optimization is a thing. I’ve been doing traditional SEO for 3 years but never thought about ChatGPT or Perplexity visibility.

Where I’m at:

  • Know basic SEO (keywords, content, links)
  • Never tracked AI visibility
  • No idea if we show up in AI answers
  • Don’t know what tools to use

What I need:

  • Step-by-step first actions
  • What to prioritize when starting from zero
  • Tools I should use
  • Realistic expectations on timeline

My constraints:

  • Limited budget
  • Small team (just me + 1 content person)
  • Can’t overhaul everything at once

Where do I literally start?

Here’s your step-by-step beginner guide:

Week 1: Establish Baseline

  1. Manual AI testing (2 hours)

    • Pick 10 queries related to your product/service
    • Ask them in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini
    • Document: Do you appear? How? What competitors show up?
  2. Set up tracking

    • Sign up for Am I Cited (free trial)
    • Add your domain
    • Get automated visibility data

Week 2-3: Quick Wins

ActionTimeImpact
Add FAQ sections to top 5 pages3 hoursHigh
Implement FAQPage schema2 hoursMedium
Convert H2s to questions2 hoursMedium
Add author bios with credentials1 hourMedium
Ensure pricing is visible30 minMedium

Week 4: Content Audit

Review your top 10 pages:

  • Does each directly answer a question?
  • Is information extractable?
  • Are there tables/lists where appropriate?

Month 2+: Systematic Optimization

Prioritize pages by:

  1. Existing traffic (fix high-traffic first)
  2. Strategic importance
  3. Gap analysis (queries you should appear for but don’t)

This is your roadmap. Start with Week 1.

Adding realistic timeline expectations:

What you’ll see and when:

TimeframeWhat Happens
Week 1-2Baseline established, understand your position
Week 3-4Quick wins implemented
Month 2Perplexity may start citing new content
Month 3-4Google AI Overview may reflect changes
Month 6+Sustained visibility improvement

What NOT to expect:

  • Overnight visibility boost
  • Appearing in ChatGPT base model quickly (training updates)
  • Dominating AI answers in 30 days

What TO expect:

  • Better understanding of AI landscape
  • Incremental improvements
  • Some quick wins, especially in Perplexity
  • Foundation for long-term visibility

The 80/20: 80% of beginner value comes from:

  • Knowing your baseline
  • Quick wins on existing content
  • Consistent tracking

Don’t over-engineer. Start simple.

Since you mentioned limited budget, here’s the cheap approach:

Free tools:

  • ChatGPT free tier (for manual testing)
  • Perplexity free (for testing)
  • Google Search (for AI Overview testing)
  • Schema markup validators (free)

Low-cost tools:

  • Am I Cited (free trial, then affordable subscription)
  • Your existing SEO tools (often have some AI features now)

Free actions with high impact:

  1. FAQ sections - Just add them to pages
  2. Question-format headings - Free to change
  3. Author bios - Write once, use everywhere
  4. Schema markup - Copy-paste from generators
  5. Content restructuring - Time, not money

Where to NOT spend money:

  • Expensive GEO agencies (you’re not ready)
  • Complex tools you don’t need yet
  • Paid AI optimization courses (free resources are fine)

Total starting cost: ~$50/month (Am I Cited subscription)

Everything else is time investment.

Common_Beginner_Mistakes Expert · December 18, 2025

Mistakes I see beginners make:

Mistake 1: Trying to optimize everything at once Fix: Start with top 10 pages only

Mistake 2: Not establishing baseline first Fix: You need to know where you are before you can improve

Mistake 3: Ignoring traditional SEO Fix: AI visibility is built ON SEO, not instead of it

Mistake 4: Creating all new content Fix: Optimize existing content first (faster ROI)

Mistake 5: Expecting immediate results Fix: This is a 3-6 month journey minimum

Mistake 6: Over-engineering schema Fix: Start with FAQPage schema only, add more later

Mistake 7: Not tracking Fix: Set up Am I Cited or manual tracking from day one

The beginner mindset: Small, consistent improvements > big overwhelming changes

This is exactly what I needed. My action plan:

This Week:

  • Test 10 queries in ChatGPT and Perplexity
  • Document where we appear (or don’t)
  • Sign up for Am I Cited free trial
  • Identify our top 10 pages to optimize

Next Week:

  • Add FAQ sections to top 5 pages
  • Implement FAQPage schema
  • Update author bios with credentials

Next Month:

  • Convert key H2s to questions
  • Ensure pricing/product info is visible
  • Review and restructure remaining top pages

Budget:

  • Am I Cited: ~$50/month
  • Everything else: Time investment

Expectations:

  • 3-6 months for meaningful results
  • Start seeing Perplexity changes in 4-6 weeks
  • Building foundation, not chasing quick wins

What I’m NOT doing:

  • Overhauling entire site
  • Hiring agency
  • Creating tons of new content

Starting simple. Building up. Thanks everyone!

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the first step in AI search optimization?
Start by establishing a baseline: find out where your brand currently appears (or doesn’t) in AI answers. Use tools like Am I Cited or manually test queries in ChatGPT and Perplexity. You can’t improve what you don’t measure.
Do I need to learn new skills for GEO?
If you understand traditional SEO, you have 80% of the foundation. GEO adds: understanding how AI cites sources, content structuring for extraction, multi-platform visibility tracking, and citation-focused metrics. Core content and technical skills transfer well.
What quick wins can I get for AI visibility?
Quick wins include: adding FAQ sections to key pages, converting headings to question format, ensuring author bios show credentials, implementing FAQPage schema, and making sure pricing/product info is publicly visible (not gated).
How long until I see results from AI optimization?
Quick wins may show impact in 2-4 weeks for Perplexity (real-time crawling). Google AI Overview follows Google rankings, so timeline matches SEO. ChatGPT base model requires training updates. Expect 3-6 months for meaningful, sustained improvement.
