Coming from traditional SEO analytics, the AI visibility metrics felt foreign at first. Here’s my mental model for mapping them:
Traditional SEO -> AI Visibility equivalent:
- Search impressions -> Prompt coverage (how many relevant prompts mention you)
- Ranking position -> Citation position (are you mentioned first, last, or not at all)
- Click-through rate -> Citation quality (are you the recommended solution or just mentioned)
- Keyword rankings -> Prompt performance (how you perform on specific queries)
Once I made those connections, the analytics made more sense.
One thing that’s different: AI analytics need more historical context. In SEO, you can see immediate ranking changes. In AI, visibility shifts gradually and you need weeks of data to see meaningful trends. Daily fluctuations are noise.
