UGC backlinks go with more AI citations, but only moderately. In DataForSEO’s
Search Insider 2026, links marked rel="ugc" correlated with Google AI Overview citations at Spearman 0.342 across 486,003 domains, and with ChatGPT citations at 0.314 across 255,413 domains.
The same study found a stronger signal in plain link popularity. A domain’s total number of referring domains correlated with AI citations at 0.406 in AI Overviews and 0.377 in ChatGPT. So the honest answer to “do Reddit and Quora links help?” is that they travel with AI visibility, and the data can’t say they cause it.
This post breaks down what the numbers show, why big sites skew them, and what to do instead of farming forum links. It’s part of our series on DataForSEO’s Search Insider 2026 findings.
Key Takeaways
- UGC backlinks correlate with AI citations at Spearman 0.342 for Google AI Overviews (486,003 domains) and 0.314 for ChatGPT (255,413 domains). Both are moderate, with p below 0.001.
- Total referring domains correlate more strongly than UGC links: 0.406 for AI Overviews and 0.377 for ChatGPT.
- Among cited domains with 10,000+ UGC links, 37.6% had over 500 AI Overview citations, versus 0.19% of domains with no UGC links.
- In ChatGPT, 25.8% of cited domains with 10,000+ UGC links appeared in over 500 answers, versus 0.08% with none.
- The 10,000+ band holds only about 500 domains in each dataset, and they tend to be large sites with big link profiles of every kind.
- No AI engine we asked quantified this. Google AI Mode claimed a “near-zero” correlation, citing a Reddit thread.
What the data shows
DataForSEO matched backlink records to citations from 137.9 million AI Overview answers and 27.5 million ChatGPT answers, then measured how a domain’s UGC link count relates to its citation count. The relationship is positive and moderate in both engines, a little weaker in ChatGPT, and weaker than the one for total referring domains.
The gap between the bands is large. The table shows the share of domains in each UGC-link band that reached heavy citation, over 500 citations, among domains with at least one citation.
| UGC links pointing to the domain | AI Overviews: share with 500+ citations | ChatGPT: share in 500+ answers |
|---|---|---|
| 0 | 0.19% | 0.08% |
| 1–10 | 1.0% | 0.2% |
| 11–100 | 5.9% | 1.0% |
| 101–1K | 15.7% | 4.3% |
| 1K–10K | 25.1% | 11.3% |
| 10K+ | 37.6% | 25.8% |
The pattern climbs steadily in both engines. DataForSEO also reports a Pearson correlation on log-transformed values of 0.377 for AI Overviews and 0.357 for ChatGPT, which tells the same story as the rank correlations.
What counts as a UGC link
A UGC link here is a backlink that carries the rel="ugc" attribute. Google asks sites to mark
links inside user-generated content, such as comments and forum posts, with ugc, and the value can be combined with nofollow. DataForSEO counted these links pointing to each domain.
That makes the metric broader than “links from Reddit and Quora”. It covers any comment section, forum or community platform that labels user links this way. It also means the links are, by design, ones Google says it will generally not follow. If you want a refresher on the content type itself, see our glossary entry on user-generated content.
Do Reddit and Quora links help?
No public study shows that adding Reddit or Quora links raises a brand’s AI citations. DataForSEO’s data shows that domains with more UGC links tend to get cited more often, and the report says plainly that this “doesn’t mean acquiring more of them will directly increase citations.” The two rise together. The data can’t show which one drives the other.
This is the exact question people search for, and it deserves a direct answer. A link from a Reddit comment is a weak, user-controlled, usually nofollowed signal. What matters more for AI answers is what the thread says. AI engines read and cite community discussions as sources, so a thread that recommends your product can shape an answer even if it never links to you.
Reddit’s weight also differs by engine. In AmICited’s tracking of 1,905 prompts from June 24 to July 23, 2026, ChatGPT cited Reddit in 7.3% of responses, 372 of 5,119. Google AI Overviews cited it in 0.9%, 19 of 2,010. A Reddit strategy that works for one engine may barely register in another.
The big-site problem
Domains with thousands of UGC links are usually large, well-known sites with large link profiles of every kind. That is the main reason not to read the 200-fold gap as an effect of UGC links. Big sites tend to get discussed on forums, linked from news and cited by AI engines at the same time, so the three numbers rise together.
Look at the size of the top band. In the AI Overviews matrix, only 505 cited domains had 10,000+ UGC links. In ChatGPT, it was 481. Those few hundred domains drive the most dramatic figure in the study, while the zero-UGC band holds about 216,000 domains in AI Overviews and 96,000 in ChatGPT.
DataForSEO’s own test points the same way. If UGC links had a special effect, they might correlate with citations more strongly than links in general. They don’t. Referring domains correlate more strongly in both engines, 0.406 versus 0.342 in AI Overviews and 0.377 versus 0.314 in ChatGPT. The report concludes that “broader backlink popularity may be a stronger indicator of AI citation visibility than UGC link volume specifically.”
Spearman’s ρ measures whether two rankings line up, from 0 for no relationship to 1 for a perfect match. A value around 0.3 to 0.4 means a real but loose pattern, with many exceptions in both directions. Plenty of domains with few UGC links get cited heavily, and plenty with many don’t.
Why other answers disagree
When we asked AI engines this question on November 7, 2026, none of them quantified the UGC effect. Google AI Mode went further and claimed a “near-zero correlation” between referring domains or Domain Rating and citations, citing only a Reddit thread from r/linkbuilding. DataForSEO’s 486,003-domain sample contradicts that, with p below 0.001.
Other studies measure different outcomes, so their numbers don’t line up with DataForSEO’s:
| Study | Sample | Outcome measured | Relevant finding |
|---|---|---|---|
| DataForSEO Search Insider 2026 | 486,003 and 255,413 cited domains | AI citations (linked sources) | UGC links ρ 0.342 / 0.314; referring domains ρ 0.406 / 0.377 |
| Semrush, October 2025 | 1,000 domains | AI mentions across five platforms | Nofollow links (ρ 0.509) about as strong as follow links (ρ 0.504) |
| Ahrefs, May 2025 | 75,000 brands | Brand mentions in AI Overviews | Branded web mentions ρ 0.664; referring domains ρ 0.295 |
A citation is a link to your page as a source. A mention is your brand named in the answer text. They’re related, but a site can earn one without the other. Sample size and selection matter too: Ahrefs filtered to sites with DR above 40, and DataForSEO only counted domains with at least one citation.
The common thread is useful. Every study finds that links go along with AI visibility, and none finds that one kind of link is a shortcut. Semrush’s result that nofollow links correlate about as well as follow links fits DataForSEO’s: the signal looks like overall popularity, not a link attribute. Our earlier post on which backlinks drive AI citations covers link types in more depth.
What brands should do now
- Don’t farm UGC links. Dropping links into comments and forums adds a weak, nofollowed signal and can damage trust. Our post on the dangers of fake Reddit marketing covers what happens when brands get caught.
- Find the threads AI engines already cite for your topics. UGC Influence lists the Reddit threads, YouTube videos and forum posts that ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity cite for your tracked prompts. Those are the discussions worth joining with real answers.
- Check whether you’re named in those threads. A cited thread that recommends a competitor is a gap. A cited thread with outdated information about your product is a support task, not a link opportunity.
- Build referring domains the normal way. Referring domains correlate more strongly with citations than UGC links do. Earn links from relevant publications, partners and resources. Our follow-up on whether backlinks still matter in 2026 has the ranking-side data.
- Measure citations per engine. Source & Citation Intelligence shows which domains and URLs each engine cites for your prompts, so you can see whether community work shows up where it matters to you.
The takeaway
UGC backlinks and AI citations rise together, but the link is moderate and the big-site effect explains much of it. Referring domains overall are the stronger signal in both Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT. Treat Reddit, Quora and forums as places where your brand gets discussed and cited, not as a link source, and measure which of those discussions AI engines actually use.
