Share of voice

Your share of all brand mentions in AI answers to your tracked prompts, measured against every brand the engines named, not only the competitors you track.

What it measures#

Share of voice answers the competitive question: of all the brands AI engines recommend for your questions, how much of that attention is yours?

Visibility tells you whether you appear. Share of voice tells you how you compare once you do. A brand that appears in every answer as one name in a list of twelve has high visibility and a small share of voice; a brand named in half the answers but alone has lower visibility and a large share.

It counts presence, not prominence. Being named first and being named ninth count the same here; average rank covers order.

How it is calculated#

Share of voice
your brand mentions ÷ all brand mentions × 100
  • Your brand mentions counts answers that named your brand, matched on your brand name and domain after normalization. Each brand is recorded once per answer, so an answer that names you five times adds one mention.
  • All brand mentions counts every brand named in the same answers, including you and including brands you have not added as competitors. The denominator is the whole conversation, not a hand-picked set.
  • Both are counted inside the date range and filters (engine, country, tag), and the result is rounded to one decimal place.
  • The change indicator compares with the previous period of the same length, in percentage points.

Worked example#

In the last 30 days your 40 prompts produced 120 answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. Those answers named 480 brands in total (about four per answer). Your brand was named in 62 of them.

62 ÷ 480 × 100 = 12.9%

A competitor named in 96 answers has 96 ÷ 480 × 100 = 20.0%. The remaining share is spread over every other brand the engines named, including ones you may never have heard of.

Why shares look smaller than you expect

Because the denominator includes every brand detected, not only your tracked competitors, shares across your competitor list rarely add up to 100%. That is deliberate: a new entrant taking share shows up in the numbers before you add it to your list.

Share of voice vs. neighbouring metrics#

Average rankWhen we appear, how early?Position in answer

Share of voice and share of citation look alike but measure different entities: brands named in the text versus sites linked as sources. The dashboard shows them as two separate charts for that reason. See mentions vs. citations.

Where to find it#

  • Dashboard hero. Your share of voice for the period with its change in pts, plus the line “{brand} is named in {n} of the AI answers we tracked”.
  • Dashboard → Share of voice over time. A daily stacked chart of you and the top other brands. Each day is that brand’s mentions over the day’s total.
  • Dashboard → Competitor share of voice. Each detected brand’s share for the period, ranked. Your brand is always included, even when it is not in the top list.
  • Competitors. The full list of detected brands with shares, where you choose which ones to track.
  • Prompts and prompt detail. Per-prompt share of voice. On a prompt’s page this figure is labelled Visibility (“of citations are yours”): your mentions divided by all brand mentions for that one prompt.

What moves it#

  • Being listed where engines look. Engines that search the web build lists from listicles, review sites and comparison pages. Getting onto the pages in Sources is usually the fastest lever.
  • Clear category association. Pages that state plainly what you are and who you are for (“X is a Y for Z”) make it easier for engines to name you for category prompts.
  • The engine filter. Engines name different numbers of brands. An engine that lists ten brands per answer dilutes everyone’s share; filter to one engine before comparing periods.
  • Prompt mix. Branded prompts (that contain your name) inflate share of voice. Keep them in their own tag so category numbers stay honest.
